The Shoei helmet shell is a three-dimensional structure made of several layers of glass fibres and organic fibres - the so-called Advanced Integrated Matrix. The organic fibres reinforce the glass fibres and optimise the weight, while the structure is bonded by an unsaturated, heat-setting polyester resin. This resin acquires its desired properties during the heat curing process: high elasticity and resistance. This technology enables a helmet shell that is characterised by high strength and low weight.
Aramid - Kevlar
Well-known brand names are Nomex, Kevlar, Twaron, Technora. Aramids are very strong and very tough, resulting in a high energy absorption capacity; their tensile strength is about ten times that of steel.Aramids are extremely heat-resistant, they can easily withstand temperatures above 370 °C without melting. However, the fibres lose their strength when exposed to UV radiation (sunlight). Depending on storage, the fibres can absorb up to 7 % water.
